History Drumshanbo



drumshanbo town originated extensive iron industry around slieve anierin 17th century. pig iron produced @ iron smelting works on east of slieve anierin brought south across lough allen drumshanbo finery forge malleable iron product produced , transported dublin , limerick boat. first ship built east india company in limerick supposedly finished product drumshanbo iron works. according folklore iron ore conveyed drumshanbo furnaces boat, on lough allen, supplied slieven iern [anerin], ballinaglera, arigna mountains, situated around lough allen . long ago ireland had been covered in woodland, claim echoed in 19th century survey of leitrim- “a hundred years ago whole country 1 continued, undivided forest, drumshanbo drumkeeran, distance of 9 or ten miles, 1 travel whole way tree tree branches . these great forests in leitrim , on west side of lough allen denuded making charcoal iron works around slieve anierin. immense piles of cleared timber existed @ drumshanbo in 1782.


throughout @ least 19th , 20th centurys, fairs held @ drumshanbo on- february 12 (or 15th), may 12 (or 17th), june 11, july 16, august 16, october 6, , november 16. in 1925, drumshanbo village comprised 77 houses, 17 being licensed sell alcohol.


some 500 victims of great famine buried @ famine-period burial ground @ drumshanbo.
