the first building on summit of snowdon erected in 1838 sell refreshments, , licence sell intoxicating liquor granted in 1845. basic accommodation provided visitors. when snowdon mountain railway opened in 1896, added own accommodation , sales outlet near summit.


during 1930s, many complaints received state of facilities @ summit , in 1934/5 new station building erected in 2 phases. designed sir clough williams-ellis , included rooms visitors , café. other operators bought out , ramshackle collection of buildings on summit cleared. flat roof intended used viewing platform , photographs show being used in way. however, other photographs taken of café show roof leaked, explains why practice stopped. summit taken on government agencies during war , accommodation restricted staff use afterwards. having become increasingly dilapidated, building described prince charles highest slum in wales . state led campaign replace building. in april 2006, snowdonia national park authority support of snowdonia society agreed deal start work on new café , visitor centre complex. mid-october 2006 old building had been largely demolished.
