aill na searrach: leap of foals

legend has when st. patrick introduced christianity ireland there anger amongst tuatha dé danann. decided magically turn horses , galloped kilcornan, hid out in kilcornan caves. time went there no sign of legendary tuatha dé danann until 1 day 7 foals emerged caves. frightened bright light of day , galloped along edge of cliffs of moher in fear. legend says galloped straight on cliffs @ point known aill na searrach (anglicised aillenasharragh), irish leap of foals .


the sunken city of kilstipheen

legend says ancient of city kilstipheen (cill stíopháin, st. stephen’s church) sank depths of liscannor bay due ghostly tsunami occurred when chieftain lost golden key in battle. key used open finest castle in city. city cannot restored former splendor until lost key can found. 1 legend has it under ogham gravestone on mount callan. legend says key thrown depths of small lake on same mountain , yet 1 day fisherman hook golden key bottom of ocean restoring city surface. folklore says kilstipheen, golden roofed palaces, ornate churches , spiraling towers can seen shining below surface of waters south miltown malbay liscannor. says once every 7 years rises above surface of waves if spot ancient city foretold not survive 7 years until surfaces again.


mal auld hag

there once old hag named mal adept in dark arts of witchcraft. fell in love legendary cú chulainn love not returned. chased him across island of ireland until reached loop head in south clare. cú had extraordinary strength , agility leapt head onto nearest island. mal, using magic, leapt after him cú jumped mainland. again mal followed him jump fell short , dashed against cliffs. blood reddened water way loop head cliffs of moher. how malbay of milltown malbay got name , face can still seen @ hags head cliffs resemble old hag looking out sea.


st. mccreehy – demon slayer of liscannor

there old church , graveyard travel liscannor lahinch called kilmacreehy (the church of mccreehy). parish takes name saint. legend has monstrous eel burst forth depths of liscannor bay feast on corpses laid rest @ graveyard. st mccreehy tackled great beast , slew after long fight. carving of eel present until @ old ruins.


so legendary bravery st mccreehy needed slay demon dragon (called bruckee). in fact bruckee more bear on time became exaggerated dragon. bruckee on ‘maccreehy’s tomb’ in kilmacreehy church, along shore of liscannor bay has long pointed ears, large eyes , huge jaws blunt-ended, bristling vicious pointed teeth.
