worship @ time of reformation

at start of scottish reformation in 1560 there no reformed standard worship in scotland, shape church took dependent on local protestant patrons.


writing exile in geneva, john knox described in detail should done @ weekly worship in letter of wholesome councell dated 1556. protestant preachers fleeing marian persecutions in england brought them edward vi s second book of common prayer (of 1552), commended lords of congregation. knox supported (indeed reportedly, had influenced aspects of it). however, before leaving geneva , encouragement of john calvin, had written own book of common order , printed , approved general assembly of 1562. enlarged, reprinted confession , psalms in metre in 1564, , remained standard until replaced westminster directory in 1643.


the regulative principle of worship (see theology of worship, above) saw many of previous practices (inherited roman catholic church) cast aside. 2 major points might unusual today s standards were:



exclusive psalmody: doctrine that, in worship, psalms (from bible) sung; singing other words done outside worship service
a cappella singing: doctrine no instruments used in worship other human voice

both of these introduced, @ least partly, prevent singing of hymns mary , saints.


introduction of continuous singing

in times common method of singing in presbyterian worship, lining out, precentor read or sang 1 line , congregation repeated after them. directory of public worship, says this:



that whole congregation may join herein, every 1 can read have psalm book; , others, not disabled age or otherwise, exhorted learn read. present, many in congregation cannot read, convenient minister, or other fit person appointed him , other ruling officers, read psalm, line line, before singing thereof.

it appears wording practical measure in 1650, not doctrinal position. lining out used other denominations practical reasons many people not sufficiently literate or because of lack of hymnals.


from around 1720 onwards, many advocated introduction of continuous (or regular) singing. continuous singing introduced many presbyterian churches worldwide, consider following traditional presbyterian line on worship; there some, still practise lining out, such steelites.


introduction of hymns

in context, hymns means hymns not part of bible; word hymn used in bible, claimed advocates of exclusive psalmody refers specific type of psalm.


after singing psalms 200 years, in 1861 church of scotland first formally adopted hymns, free church of scotland doing same in 1872. hymns , other extra-biblical words used in presbyterian circles; details vary denomination denomination.

in nineteenth century, revd r. william ritchie of st. andrew s church, glasgow, attempted introduce organ church, informed presbytery of glasgow use of organs in public worship of god contrary law of land , constitution of our established church.


in 1863, revd robert lee introduced harmonium worship @ greyfriars kirk, edinburgh. lee defended instrumental music @ 1864 general assembly, declared such innovations should put down when interfered peace of church , harmony of congregations . pipe organ subsequently installed in greyfriars, , first used in 1865.
