after d-day, allies headed toulon amphibious assault, codenamed operation dragoon. support this, many ships sent beaches of normandy mediterranean, including 5 battleships (the united states nevada, texas, arkansas, british ramillies, , free french lorraine), 3 heavy cruisers (augusta, tuscaloosa , quincy), , many destroyers , landing craft transferred south.

nevada headed new york have gun barrels relined. in addition, 14 /45 caliber guns (356 mm) turret 1 replaced mark 8 guns turret 2 of arizona; these new guns relined mark 12 specifications. after completed, sailed pacific, arriving off iwo jima on 16 february 1945 [prepare] island invasion heavy bombardment ; did through 7 march. during invasion, moved within 600 yd (550 m) shore provide maximum firepower troops advancing.
