continuing there, road rises steadily head of valley, large cirque surrounded sheer cliffs of towering mountains around it. point, @ eastern portal of homer tunnel highest point of milford road @ 945 metres (3,100 ft). although tunnel wide enough 2 lanes, traffic lights control traffic 1 direction @ time on peak period of summer months, can cause delays of 20 minutes. @ 1,270 metres (4,170 ft) long, homer tunnel third-longest road tunnel in new zealand (after waterview tunnel , lyttelton road tunnel).


on western side of tunnel, road emerges @ head of cleddau valley, u-shaped valley typical valleys , fiords of west coast of fiordland. after descending steeply via 3 hairpin turns, road follows valley floor last 16 kilometres down sea level @ milford sound, passing 1 last car park @ chasm along way. @ road s end @ milford sound, public car parking provided on 300 vehicles, parking tour buses @ visitor terminal next wharf.
