the original campus university @ roe green in hatfield, founded technical college. gape family of st michael s manor in st albans owned land @ roe green late 17th century. in 1920s sold hill, farmer, sold alan butler, chairman of de havilland aircraft company lived @ beech farm nearby. in 1944 donated 90 acres (36 hectares) of land @ roe green used educational purposes. in 1948 building commenced. first principal w.a.j chapman started on 1 january 1949 , in spring 1952 33 full-time , 66 part-time teachers appointed. hatfield technical college opened 1,738 students in september 1952 , in december officially opened duke of edinburgh. first large technical college established in england after war. students attended college on part-time or full-time courses.

in 1958 renamed hatfield college of technology , 1960 offered four-year sandwich diplomas in technology. in 1961 designated regional college in england , wales ministry of education. governors purchased digital computer @ cost of £29,201 in 1962 computer science degree established. council national academic awards formed in 1965 , hatfield college recognised 13 honours degree courses.


sir norman lindop became principal of college of technology in 1966. year later l.e. haines made chair of governors, died shortly afterwards , replaced f. bramston austin. in same year bayfordbury acquired college. following year, l. e. haines appointed chair of governors, dies shortly after appointment , replaced f. bramston austin. in 1967 bayfordbury acquired institution.
