uddevalla received town privileges in 1498, place trade long before that. formerly, uddevalla belonged norway, , name today comes original norwegian oddevald. due close location sweden , denmark, besieged. in 1612, burnt down swedish troops led jesper mattson krus , in 1644, once again burnt down, time swedish commander harald stake. in 1658, ceded sweden @ treaty of roskilde. norwegians recaptured town year later, , in 1660, once again ceded sweden @ peace treaty of copenhagen. later, norway annexed uddevalla , nearby fortress on galleberg repeatedly, last time in 1788.


in 18th , 19th century, uddevalla s main source of income herring fishing. town noted great fires damaged city on several occasions. devastating fire in 1806, when whole town burned ground. 4 houses left untouched , 4,000 people became homeless.


during 19th century, uddevalla had trouble getting out of own recession, poverty , alcoholism widespread among population. reasons aftermath of fire in 1806, decrease in herring fishing , opening of trollhätte canal.


in 1870–80, uddevalla began attract new industries. of development can attributed scottish businessman william thorburn, said have been amazed town s beauty , therefore settled down in uddevalla wife jessy macfie in 1822. founded number of industries, starting textile companies. building of new railroad, bohus line, contributed town s recovering economy. prominent person in uddevalla s history ture malmgren, newspaper publisher , progressive liberal politician.


during 1958 fifa world cup, uddevalla 1 of twelve swedish towns host matches, played @ rimnersvallen stadium.


21st century

after swedish shipyard crisis during 1980s, resulting in closing of uddevallavarvet, uddevalla suffered economic setback. on thirty years following that, town has recovered , population once again increasing, steadily.
