curriculum

isd s curriculum follows basic greenwich public schools elementary school curriculum integrated international baccalaureate primary years programme (ibpyp) model. school s stated mission encourage continuous learning among students them become responsible citizens of world. involves goals include students becoming thinkers, communicators, inquirers, principled, reflective, open-minded, balanced, risk-takers, caring, , knowledgable. isd expects staff embody these characteristics well. curriculum emphasizes development of inquiry among school s students. chief principle of ib program. isd s website describes inquiry process involving planned experiences provide opportunities students pose questions , gather information.

language arts - helps students develop communication skills including reading, writing, listening, , speaking.
library media , technology - helps students develop technological , media based skills including basic computer , keyboard skills, internet , library research, , creating multimedia presentations.
math
music , visual art - includes goals of helping students learn express themselves, understand how artistic choices made, , understanding artistic process impact.

band , chorus programs offered fourth , fifth grade students.
the orchestra program offered students in grades 3-5.


physical education - program adopting 6 national standards physical education.
science - students develop basic knowledge of living organisms , relationship physical world how apply scientific knowledge everyday life.
social studies - includes lessons on social interaction, geography, research, , critical thinking, taught in context of history.

advanced learning program

the advanced learning program offered in greenwich public schools on elementary level. program students considered talented , gifted after consensus of teachers, school psychologists, , program facilitators, , after evaluation of standardized test scores. program offers accelerated learning activities , other activities enrichment.


fifth grade ib exhibition

the fifth grade exhibition research project in isd s fifth grade students apply research , inquiry skills have acquired throughout elementary school years. student-led project in fifth graders explore topic of choosing in small groups. teacher mentor guides each group during completion of project , meets them once week track progress.


phases of exhibition:



phase one: students presented teachers expectations project , given examples of acceptable topics , how research can presented. students select topics exhibition , form small groups paired teacher mentors. students create planner , journal use throughout completion of project.
phase two: students begin researching topics , develop ideas presentation of classroom teachers , library media specialist. expected conduct research outside of school trips museums , other venues appropriate further understanding of topic.
phase 3: students create exhibition information compiled during research. each group creates informative presentation creative component. school s explanation of project says, creative component movie, tv commercial, construction project, fashion show, art project, musical number, skit or else can come manner of expressing knowledge , new understandings.
phase 4: students revise , rehearse presentations. on course of few days students present exhibition projects teachers, parents, , fellow students.
