the city of landskrona claimed have been founded in 1413 king of denmark, eric of pomerania, trading city intended compete danish towns under control of hanseatic league. there evidence found in danish national archive, mention town name landzcrone in 1405.


the site possesses best natural harbour in scania, @ time part of denmark. @ time of foundation site held fishing settlement named sønder sæby. original name of officially founded town landszcrone, changed landskrone sometime before 1450.


a carmelite monastery founded in 1410, english merchants granted privileges in royal charter in 1412, , town chartered in 1413. monastery closed king christian iii after reformation, survives in name of street karmelitergatan .


the town supported king christian ii in 1525, , opposed reformation in denmark (1535); in both causes found on losing side. reformist king christian iii of denmark opted not retaliate against town, , instead founded castle protect harbour. castle, built monastery had been situated until reformation, completed 1559.


after scania ceded swedish crown in 1658, harbour , strong fort motivated plans make landskrona commercial center of acquired territory, extraordinary privileges foreign trade. castle reinforced bastions, , area inside moats extended 400x400 meters. castle considered strongest , modern in scandinavia, temporarily lost danes after comparably short siege lasting july 8 august 2, 1676. commandant, colonel hieronymus lindeberg, consequently sentenced death high treason.


in 1753 swedish military commander feared tower of sancti johannis baptistae church threat citadel , demanded demolition of church. though cornerstone of new sofia albertina church laid following year, not inaugurated until 1788, , completed in 1812. unusually church not dioscean seat, new church built 2 towers, possibly in compensation larger medieval predecessor.


landskrona s military importance declined after 18th century. continued swedish–danish wars led karlskrona replacing landskrona naval base, located @ safer distance denmark. although fortifications @ landskrona expanded considerably between 1747 , 1788, condemned in 1822, whereafter garrison abolished in 1869. last military regiment, skånska husarregimentet, k5 renamed , moved landskrona uppsala in 1926. today walls , moats of fortifications of landskrona citadel recreational area , castle holds museum. on northern side, allotment-garden area of cottages founded in final years of 19th century, , today oldest of kind in sweden. military s large exercise field became public heath, today called exercisfältet or exan .


the town grew after industrial revolution , subsequent urbanization. during first world war large shipyard, Öresundsvarvet constructed. in mid-1970s shipyard employed more 3,500 people, in town 30,000 inhabitants. shipyard closed down in stages late 1970s, closing in 1983.

the line 1933 saxtorp tt-motorcycle race


on 14 may 1919 swedish engineer , flight pioneer enoch thulin, lived , worked in landskrona, died when crashed own airplane @ södra fäladen fields. funeral service held in sofia albertina church.


between 1930 , 1939 saxtorp tt-races held south of town. races attracted 160,000 attendees , considered largest sporting events crowd size ever held in sweden.
