History Brava,_Cape_Verde



brava discovered in 1462 portuguese sailors. portuguese founded settlement here in 1573 sailors azores , madeira (some sources dated 1620). sir francis drake visited island in 1579.


in 1680, inhabitants fled nearby larger island of fogo after volcano erupted , lava began flow , devastate of east of island, added small part population of island. in 17th , 18th centuries, pirates raided bays of island. piracy continued until 19th century, when whaling common ships of europe , north america.


emigration began whaleships carried people brava northeastern part of north america, along eastern seaboard. of immigrants brava settled in boston , new bedford, massachusetts, , providence, rhode island, there numerous cape verde , portuguese immigrants. in 19th century, many of men continued work in whaling. american consulate opened in 1843, in late 1970s, became embassy in cape verde , moved capital city of praia today.
