youth , education

farey eldest son of john farey sr. (1766–1826), geologist, , sophia hubert (1770–1830). older brother of joseph farey (1796–1829), became known mechanical engineer , draughtsman , member of institution of civil engineers in 1822. remained in shadow of older brother , died young.


from 1791 1802 grew in woburn, bedfordshire, father stationed surveyor , land agent francis russell, 5th duke of bedford. in london might have received training @ school of william nicholson, established in 1799 in london s soho square. did later on work nicholson on patent assignments. 1804 1806 studied machinery , processes in manufacturing factories in , around london.

at age of fourteen farey commenced make drawings illustrative plates of rees s cyclopædia , edinburgh encyclopiedias, tilloch s magazine, gregory s mechanics , mechanical dictionary, pantalogia, , many other scientific works. edited of these, , contributed others.


for rees s cyclopædia, appeared serially between 1802 , 1820, farey wrote several articles, including articles on machinery, manufactures, mechanics, mill, steam engine, water etc.


he came possession of manuscript , drawings of engineer john smeaton , made extensive use of them in writing , drawing. involved in production of second volume of smeaton s reports (1812), plates engraved wilson lowry.


in 1819 went russia month, engaged civil engineer in construction of ironworks.


later career

in 1821 farey stepped down in consulting engineering family business in favour of younger brother, joseph farey (1796–1829). farey accepted appointment @ lace manufactory of john heathcoat in devonshire, which, however, gave in 1823,


in 1825 took engineering direction of messrs. marshall s flax-mills @ leeds; position obliged relinquish in 1826 in consequence of failure of brother s health , necessity return london, resumed profession of consulting engineer, , time engaged in of novel inventions, important trials in litigated patent cases, , scientific investigations of period.


farey joined institution of civil engineers member in 1826, served several offices in council, , took great interest in welfare. residence, 67 great guilford street, russell square, london, burnt down in 1850, when considerable portions of library , documents injured or destroyed.


his health, had been failing since death of wife, received additional shock, , died of disease of heart @ common, sevenoaks, kent, on 17 july 1851. , buried in highgate cemetery.
