2008 season
the pbl formed after number of disagreements between several former member teams of modern american basketball association (aba) , aba ceo joe newman. 8 of initial ten pbl teams either played in or slated play in aba.
in 2007, newman voted out of position ceo of aba board of directors, included maryland nighthawks owner , then-aba coo tom doyle (who later commissioner of pbl), citing dissatisfaction how newman executed duties ceo, large number of aba teams did not have funds operate, , high number of games when aba team did not show up. newman responded using , other shares formed controlling interest remove entire board of directors.
newman refused reschedule weather-delayed playoff game between rochester razorsharks , wilmington sea dawgs although 2 teams agreed make date, wanting instead force rochester accept forfeit. on heels of these 2 incidents nighthawks , razorsharks ownership groups decided found pbl. dr. sev hrywnak, owner of rochester razorsharks, invested close $2 million dollars start pbl. business model structured teams entering initial season did not have pay entrance fee of $100,00 , travel covered league. wuld allow new teams opportunity have financial success start.

2009 season
during 2008 off season, 6 more former aba teams decided move pbl. first, on may 9, manchester millrats , 2006–2007 , 2007–2008 aba champion vermont frost heaves moved. on may 20, inactive detroit panthers re-activated , joined league. , on may 21, quebec kebs joined. on june 5 team aba history, augusta groove, joined league, continental basketball association. on june 23, halifax rainmen, aba team previous year, announced joining pbl. first international basketball league defection came on july 31 when battle creek knights joined league. rochester razorsharks went on win second straight pbl title after beating battle creek knights.
2010 season
the battle creek knights, wilmington sea dawgs , lawton-fort sill cavalry not return 2010 season. maryland nighthawks changed name of franchise maryland greenhawks. puerto rico capitanes joined league, performing concurrently in baloncesto superior nacional.
at end of season, league officially severed ties buffalo stampede, citing failure team adhere league standards. maryland greenhawks dropped league. bluegrass stallions, aba team located in kentucky, joined. league added expansion dayton air strikers.
2011 season
in january, vermont frost heaves abruptly announced cessation of operations , players dispersed via draft. rochester razorsharks won league championship.
2012 season
the league approved expansion teams in chicago , scranton, pennsylvania 2012 pbl season. also, chattanooga, tennessee, hershey, pennsylvania, , madison, wisconsin named cities pending approval expansion teams.
on 18 july 2011, pbl announced dayton air strikers returning league 2012 season. in addition, northwestern illinois-based sauk valley predators began inaugural season in pbl 2012. on august 22, 2011, announced charleston gunners pbl s sixth team 2012 season. on september 15, 2011, announced northwest indiana stars leaving aba pbl s seventh team 2012 season. on 21 september 2011 announced lake michigan admirals leaving aba pbl s eighth team 2012 season. on 23 september 2011 announced pbl s ninth team 2012 season central illinois drive based in bloomington, illinois. on october 12, 2011, announced indiana diesels leaving aba pbl s tenth team 2012 season. on october 14, 2011, announced st. louis pioneers leaving aba join pbl, changing name st. louis phoenix.
the central illinois drive won pbl championship 2012, defeating rochester razorsharks, 101-80. drive 18-1 in regular season , 22-1 total.
2013 season
during off season league announced merging independent basketball association form iba-pbl. prior start of season, defending champions, central illinois drive, ceased operations, rebooted bloomington flex.
on 24 may 2013, 6 pbl teams announced 2 leagues cease interleague play, , leagues hold separate playoffs. in first round of pbl playoffs, bloomington flex beat indiana diesels 2 games none, , rochester razorsharks beat sauk valley predators 2 games none. in finals, flex beat razorsharks 2 games none win second consecutive title.
on 21 september 2013, pbl announced first of expected 6 expansion teams, lima express signing play 2014 season, begin in january.
on 12 november 2013, pbl announced addition of pee dee vipers, expansion team based in florence, south carolina. 3 days later, league announced lake michigan admirals return 2014. on november 25, pbl announced addition of buffalo 716ers , erie hurricane. in late november chicago tide joined league.
on 6 february 2014, announced newly formed grand rapids cyclones join pbl.

2015 season
several games in 2015 season had postponed due winter weather, leading rescheduling of games in march ascertain every team in league have played @ least 15 games before playoffs. best-of-three finals-only playoffs between midwest division champions lake michigan admirals , east division champions rochester razorsharks opened on march 21 in waterlivet, michigan, game 2 set march 28 in rochester. rochester razorsharks won 2015 pbl championship, winning first 2 games in best-of 3 series against lake michigan admirals.

2016 season
many new franchise additions occurred in 2015 off-season including jamestown jackals, kentucky mavericks, western new york thundersnow, , return of danville riverhawks. mavericks owner jerry nelson become equity partner in pbl. in addition, pbl gained new southeast conference includes 6 members of tobacco road basketball league: cary invasion, charlotte elite, durham legacy, huntersville hoopforlyfe, raleigh revolt, , wilmington sea dawgs.
