the monastery founded around 630 ad irish monks, disciples of saint columbanus , adalbard of douai, on advice of saint amand. after death of adalbert of ostrevent in 642 ad, widow, rictrude, made double monastery herself first abbess. there among founders, besides adalbaud , rictrude, st. eusebius (d. 660) (their daughter) , saint maurant(their son).


the monastery managed grow city , region bought clearing, drainage , exploitation of marshes , bogs. devastated normans in 9th century , end of 10th century. in 1024 ad, marchiennes become male community under rule of saint benedict. 11th 13th century marchiennes becomes 1 of major abbeys in north of france. scriptorium produced significant amount of illuminated manuscripts. on may 16, 1133, relics of saint eusebius interred.


in 16th century, abbey benefits @ peak of power. supports creation of college @ university of douai between 1564 , 1570. in august 1566, devastated beggars destroy of works of art. robust activity persists until 18th century when fortunes changed.


in 1712, @ famous siege of marchiennes, abbey , town bombed 4 days , partially destroyed. restoration undertaken. of remaining buildings today date period. came french revolution, benedictines persecuted. in 1791, monastery closed.


the tower of abbey church pulled down in 1817, following fate of other buildings sold @ turn of century national property.


today remains include abbey gate dating 1748, operations building built monks , brewery being restored. remains of abbey registered in inventory of historical monuments on may 17, 1974, @ ministry of culture.
