luxembourg liberated allied forces in september 1944, u.s. army combat command (cca), 5th armored division. first u.s. forces entered luxembourgish territory near petange on 9 september, , liberated capital city on 10 september 1944. germans retreated without fighting. 12 september 90% of grand duchy had been liberated. 1 month before start of battle of bulge, 250 soldiers of waffen-ss had unsuccessfully tried recapture town of vianden luxembourgish resistance during battle of vianden. during battle of bulge, northern part of country hit artillery special unit germans designed send shells 40 km (25 mi) away (see v3), germans did not take city.
