mountshannon village has 4 pubs, 1 of hotel, corner shop/cafe, restaurant, garage/shop , pizzeria.


it used starting point visiting nearby inis cealtra, or holy island. uninhabited, once monastic settlement. has round tower, , ruins of several small churches, part of 4 high crosses , holy well. cemetery on island still in use, coffins being transported clare side in small boats. there stone hole in it, through lovers held hands , promised true. boat trips can taken harbour island.

a recent addition mountshannon maze built in centre of town in small park views of lough derg. maze features information development of irish spiritual tradition. alongside picnic area made out of wood carved local artists, encircled willow hedging. in entrance stone hole facing toward holy island. island can viewed penitent kneeling on stone in order view through hole. rear of maze labyrinth consisting of lawn being cut @ different heights, flower beds , hornbeam hedging. modelled on pavement labyrinth @ chartres cathedral in france. mountshannon has been recurring winner in tidy towns competition having won national prize in 1981, silver in 2004 , numerous bronzes on years. took bronze in population category in 2010.
