prior election, independent frank purdue had gained seat of waratah labor party @ by-election caused death of edward greaves. sam jones regained seat labor @ general election.


despite strong swing of more 5% coalition, result of election remained in doubt 2 weeks. effects of long incumbency bolstered cumulative effects of number of re-distributions limited labor s losses 9 seats. in several of these margin of defeat less 300 votes. in final result coalition had 47 seats, 1 short of majority. however, rely on support of 2 conservative independents--douglas darby, former liberal subsequently readmitted party room, , harold coates, had won seat of hartley. after providing speaker, coalition able form government three-seat majority in assembly, ending 24 years , 8 terms of labor government.

the dlp contested 28 seats and, while gained less 2.5% of statewide primary vote, preferences favoured coalition , vital success. communist party reduced 13 candidates received negligible support.
