by 17th century fitzgeralds spent force. in south-east corner of old church in ballyoughtera, stone has boar crest surrounded triple incised circles , shallow cross carving encircle. @ northern end of ballyoughtera church ruin grave of richard boyle, 4th earl of shannon died in 1868. tomb bears inscription, “a sorrowing wife placed stone in memory of best , affectionate of husbands”.
