the opisthosoma (abdomen) smooth oval of 12 recognizable segments. first reduced , forms pedicel, while last 3 constricted, forming pygidium. last segment bears short whip-like tail or flagellum, consisting of no more 4 segments. females have 3-4-segmented flagella, while in males single segmented.


like related orders thelyphonida , amblypygi, , more distantly related solifugae, schizomids use 6 legs walking, having modified first 2 legs serve sensory organs. have large well-developed pincer-like pedipalps before sensory legs. hind legs modified jumping, part of escape response when threatened. schizomids have no actual eyes, few species have vestigial eyespots capable of telling light dark. breath through single pair of book lungs, other pair lost.
