in 2014, activision announced three-year development cycle call of duty series, in infinity ward, sledgehammer games , treyarch take turns in releasing call of duty video game every year extend each game s development time. infinite warfare third , last game in first cycle, , first video game developed infinity ward since 2013 s call of duty: ghosts. development game dates far 2014. according infinity ward, development team added lots of new ideas game, , put emphasis on game s storytelling. team chose space game s setting believed can introduce new environments players. make game more realistic, infinity ward had consulted several military experts. team wants start infinite warfare sub-series.

in august 2016, activision sent mysterious metal packages youtubers in call of duty community. each came combination lock , countdown timer. code sent recipients open boxes once timer reached 1 minute. each box contained variety of 80 s-themed apparel, plus cassette player , vhs tape, contained reveal trailer zombies in spaceland. hd version of trailer released hours after, along reveal of game s new mechanics, zombies in spaceland bonus preorder pack, contains weapon camouflage, animated player card, fate , fortune card pack use in zombies mode. official reveal of infinite warfare s multiplayer mode took place during call of duty xp 2016 convention, held in september 2016.
