by beginning of 20th century, törley had expanded distribution throughout world, , ironically, sparkling wine had become quite popular in paris, france. 1905, production reached 1 million bottles. business grew, törley built huge mansion above factory. 2 buildings linked secret tunnel allowing törley, henry ford had done, make sudden, unannounced appearance @ time in factory. progressive industrialist törley first buy trucks in hungary transportation of goods, , founding member of royal hungarian automobile club.


in 1907 winery celebrated 25th anniversary , törley’s sparkling wines known america australia. firm had warehouses in hamburg, berlin , copenhagen. törley himself did not long outlive 25th anniversary of factory in summer of 1907, died in ostend, belgium. törley, roman catholic, left instructions body buried in budafok. törley had no children, factory inherited brothers , sons. under management of these heirs, factory continued flourish.


by 1910, there competition other champagne producers in hungary. budafok alone had 18 different producer operating, törley plant still had greatest market share in hungary. winery s output reached 2 million bottles , törley had become 1 of leading brands of sparkling wine in europe.


after world war ended , trianon peace treaty signed, level of champagne production törley plant decreased , touched bottom during great depression. in 1929-30, annual production barely reached 200,000 bottles. in 1930s, demand sparkling wine increased again , during world war ii production again reached 1 million bottles annually. during wartime boom, demand became far greater quantity produced existing technology. likewise, war made difficult estimate demand in 3 years time – gestation period of törley champagne. despite demand war had created, hostilities reversed törley plant’s fortune when bomb destroyed main building , majority of factory’s stocks in july 1944.


after world war ii ended, communism took control of hungary , winery shrank 4 employees , scope of business limited selling wine remained in stock. in 1949, factory nationalized , production resumed in 1951 törley becoming champagne factory in hungary , operating under supervision of unicum likõrgyár (the unicum liqueur factory). increasing demand , export possibilities encouraged factory develop annual capacity of 30 million bottles end of 1980s through continuous expansion , purchasing production lines of latest technology. today, törley factory produces 12 14 million bottles each year , has close 50% domestic market share in hungary. in 21st century, törley has developed popular following in asian countries.


the world’s first champagne order, chevaliers torley established @ törley factory in 1987. members accepted order after initiation procedure known french name “dégorgement.” part of initiation requires members remove sediment in neck of bottle according method devised törley himself.


hungarian state wine-cellars appropriated champagne factory in 1955, predecessor of today’s hungária, took on törley champagne factory unicum. in 1987, hungarovin became owner of törley. since 1992, henkell & söhnlein hungaria kft, subsidiary of henkell & söhnlein sektkellerei ag of wiesbaden, germany has owned , produced törley brand.
