arthur , band on pilgrimaging voyage , forth holy land (jerusalem). neither holy land nor jerusalem mentioned explicitly, , line seeking him on sea sackless sold (by judas).. implies going jerusalem, site of holy sepulchre, tomb of christ. (ll. 1-4)


the opening lines mention heading towards tuscany, 2 major episodes take place somewhere in france. city arthur replenishes provisions of uncertain location, presumably somewhere still west of rhone river. golagros s castle in rhone valley (somewhat confusing since on first instance (line 319) original print reads rome, ) emended rone, occurs elsewhere.


note arthur vows subjugate golagros s castle on way holy land, puts action after reaching jerusalem, retracing route rhone.


the city of provisions

(lines 27~221)

approaching city, arthur s large band starts running out of victuals, , sir kay sent inside buy food , provisions. hall deserted, in adjoining kitchen dwarf roasting fowl, , kay hungry grabs meat. lord of castle appears , rebukes him, kay answers defiantly, earning thrashing. (ll. 40-118)


king arthur sends sir gawain bargain lord. sir gawain courteously entreats lord of castle furnish supplies @ whatever price asks. lord says cannot comply, meant cannot possibly accept payment, because bring him insufferable shame, deserving of being drawn (by horse). city s lord promises furnish arthur army of 30,000 whenever in need. arthur s band given feast lasts 4 days, , supplied wine , wastell bread aplenty. (ll. 119-221)


castle of gologras

(lines 222~1362)

after many more weary days of travel, king arthur reaches magnificent castle on river rhone, in southern france. castle boasted thirty-three towers in edifice. moored alongside forty sea-going vessels bound distant corners of world , king arthur asks overlord of wonderful place. on being told knowledgeable sir spynagrose lord owes allegiance nobody, arthur horrified , vows make lord (golagros) submit him upon return.


king arthur reaches holy land, , returns gologras s castle on rhone. arthur , retinue camp before castle, pitching pavilion type tents, planning strategy, possibility of laying siege in case negotiations break down. arthur sends out 3 knights emissaries, gawain, lancelot, , ewane (ywaine). gologras refuses pay homage arthur liege-lord.


the emissaries return arthur, , begin preparations siege. cannonballs (pellokis, sing. pellok) loaded gaping brass cannons (gapand gunnys of brase), , there sharpened darts (ganyeis, sing. ganye), making huge noise. trees felled, , hurdles put up.


inside castle, gologras s army preparing, wearing greaves on shins , garatouris (sing. garitour) on knees. @ glance there 140 shields in row, sturdy helmet , lance upon each shield. each knight s heraldic device on display, inscribed name visible.


then great sound of trumpet heard castle, , man blew strutted towards tower, armed, flashing sunlight in direction shield , brandishing spear. king arthur asked meaning of this, , sir spinogras explained challenge single combat.


king arthur chooses gaudifeir face off against galiot. gaudifeir rode berry-brown or bay horse, , other blanchard or white horse. gaudifeir triumphs, , galiot taken arthur s stronghold.


the following day, gologras sends out sir rigal of rone, , king arthur counters sir rannald. after long , hard battle, 2 knights kill 1 another, , buried.


gologras sends out 4 knights, louis, edmond, bantellas, , sanguel/sangwell, matched against sir lionel, ywain, bedivere, , gyromalance, respectively.


following battle in honours even, gologras sends out 5 knights, agalus, ewmond, mychin, meligor, , hew. round table appeared 4 knights, cador of cornwall, owales, iwell, , myreot (and possibly fifth knight named emell.) arthur s side lose owales , iwell prisoners, capture agalus , hew, honours @ end of all, remain even.


at point golgros s eye flare in anger, , declares sal bargane abyde, , ane end bryng; (i shall take combat, , make , end of it). 2 small bells rung in castle s belfry. arthur inquires meaning, , again spynagrose explains bells announcement castle lord gologras himself entering combat in person. arthur s nephew sir gawain insists upon taking challenge on king s behalf. spynagrose fearful of gawain s safety , survival, , offers him specific tips in combat, such sustain consecutive blows shield no matter happens, , strike when adversary lets up, being out of breath. meanwhile, sir kay not assigned opponent challenges man on brown steed , prevails.


at last gologras appears. wore armor adorned red gold , rubies , many heirlooms, , silken fringes. mounted on white-complexioned horse (or horse white forehead) studded gold , beryl. gologras tall, standing half foot higher other.


this single-combat between gologras , sir gawain long , evenly fought, @ last sir gawain gains upper hand, when gologras loses footing on slope (bra), , sir gawain able draw dagger , hold adversary s throat. gologras not ask mercy. prefers death dishonour of surrendering sir gawain. victorious knight tries persuade other capitulate , gologras replies if sir gawain pretend have been defeated , walk off field prisoner, see matters resolved sir gawain s liking once in castle. despite not knowing gologras @ all, sir gawain agrees plan, sensing adversary honourable. pick ground, pretend fight while (a myle way, time takes walk mile, or twenty minutes or half hour), gologras leads sir gawain off field prisoner. roles have been reversed. king arthur groans in anguish , begins weep.


there great joy inside castle, , board (meal tables) set. gawain offered seat next dais (the medieval meal table). gologras bangs table heavy wand command attention, , addresses noblemen rule baronies , towns. asks honest opinion on following: prefer defeated on field , captured, or killed lord may replace him rule on them. nobles distressed, because begin understand happened. reply rather have gologras lord end of days.


gologras , sir gawain issue castle together, unarmed, , gologras approaches king arthur in submission, agreeing have land held in fiefdom king. whole weeks feasting ensues in celebration, , @ end of 9 days, king arthur prepares leave, relinquishes sovereignty of land , gives full control gologras.
