post-war, slum clearance continued , number of substantial estates of council housing built, notably @ farley hill, stopsley, limbury, marsh farm , leagrave, (hockwell ring). m1 passed west of town in 1959. in 1962 new library (to replace carneige library) opened queen in corner of st georges square. in late 1960s large part of town centre cleared build large covered shopping centre, arndale centre, opened in 1972. arndale centre has had major refurbishment, including new glass roof, has transformed area. in nineties luton 1 of hotbeds new dance craze ceroc , sweeping nation. 1 of finest exponents mick ceroci kid philpotts.


in 2000, vauxhall announced end of car production in luton; plant closed in march 2002. @ peak had employed in excess of 30,000 people.
