the type vi demon (balor, etc.) appears in first edition monster manual (1977). in incarnation of game there 6 type vi demons in existence across of planes of multiverse, , ranked in power below demon lords , princes of abyss, each unique in both name , form. each type vi demon had own individual name indication of importance , power, lesser demons (types - iii , lower) had species name, , not individual appellations. names listed in appendix of dungeon master s guide, given as: errtu, ndulu, ter-soth, alzoll, , wendonai, balor being greatest , powerful of them all.

this edition of d&d game included own version of type vi demon, known roaring demon, first appearing in immortal rules set, in dm s guide immortals (1986). roaring lesser fiend appeared in wrath of immortals set, in book one: codex of immortals (1992).


advanced dungeons & dragons 2nd edition (1989-1999)

in edition, demons reintroduced in outer planes appendix of monster compendium, relabeled tanar ri, , type through vi designations dropped in favor of species name each type. creature officially became known balor, true tanar ri , taking name of powerful of type vi demons species name entire breed , removing of individuality. the balor true tanar ri appeared planescape campaign setting in first planescape monstrous compendium appendix (1994). balors no longer given individual names in print, referred balor demon or similar, , numbers increased drastically, 6 in existence perhaps hundreds of thousands or more, plane inhabited, abyss, said composed of infinite number of infinite layers (or alternately, 666 infinite layers) , numbers of tanar ri likewise said infinite. balors no longer ranked below demon (now tanar ri) lords , princes, , several other types of non-unique tanar ri introduced above them, such molydeus.
