the station opened around 1900 two-track surface station named south midwood, reference location @ southern end of former town of flatbush, historically known midwood. currently, midwood considered area south of station stands, more correctly described being in south flatbush or north midwood. station located along brooklyn, flatbush , coney island railroad line brighton beach, built in 1878.


in 1903, reconstruction project began remove grade crossings along line part of brighton beach improvement, rebuilt stations of brooklyn, flatbush , coney island railroad , electrified line due increased ridership on line. when on surface, station division point @ short turned elevated trains of fulton street el terminated. after grade crossings on line eliminated in 1908, station became through stop services; @ time given name newkirk avenue. on eastern side of station entrance building there plaque, reads: depression , elevation of railroad abolish grade crossings authorized legislature may 9th, 1903. joint undertaking between city of new york , brooklyn heights r.r. co. under direction of brooklyn grade crossing commission. ..... work commenced august 1st 1904 - completed july 1st 1908. plaque refers aforementioned grade crossing project.


during 1964–1965 fiscal year, platforms @ newkirk avenue, along @ 6 other stations on brighton line, lengthened 615 feet accommodate ten-car train of 60-foot ind cars, or nine-car train of 67-foot bmt cars.


in 1981, mta listed station among 69 deteriorated stations in subway system. starting in late 1980s or 1990s, business owners in adjoining shopping area began advocating station renamed after mall. station , mall underwent reconstruction 2009 2011. included installation of yellow warning strips on platform edges , repainting of columns red green. renovation cost $30 million. part of renovation of station, renamed newkirk plaza in august 2011.
