as cultural revolution neared end, rightist label removed in 1974. assumed of friends in high positions had survived turmoil , secured political rehabilitation. allowed retire college in 1975, , went hometown chengdu. in 1987, party membership restored. in chengdu, met abandoned wife of huang jilu (黃季陸), kmt government minister had fled taiwan. after seeing squalor , misery living in, hu organized old people s association improve lives of elderly, attracted 1,000 members. west china medical university set geriatric health centre after lobbying, , helped raise funds set retirement home 80 beds.
hu lanqi died in chengdu on 13 december 1994, @ age of 93.
