a few national parks , national forests require backcountry visitors carry approved food storage containers. backpackers ignore policy may face fines, property impounded, or eviction wilderness. rangers may stop hikers , require them produce containers inspection.


the sierra interagency black bear group (sibbg) , interagency grizzly bear committee regulate approval of food storage containers in parts of western united states. containers effective against american black bears in sierra nevada may not effective against grizzly bears found elsewhere. sibbg conducts visual inspection , various structural tests, containers filled food , left in cages of captive black bears in zoo in california. if canister survives zoo test, conditionally approved. full approval given after 3 months of successful field tests users.

it recommended canisters left on ground, @ least 100 feet /30 metres campsite. suspending canister can allow bear smash ground or use suspension gear carry away. prevent bear rolling away, container left in bush, shallow depression, or wedged between rocks or logs. placing canister near water allow container float away. reflective tape , labelling container helps in recovery.
