in 2015, country of india home largest number of children working illegally in various industrial industries. agriculture in india largest sector many children work @ ages support family. many of these children forced work @ young ages due many family factors such unemployment, large number of family members, poverty, , lack of parental education. major cause of high rate of child labour in india.


on 23 june 1757, english east india company defeated siraj-ud-daula, nawab of bengal, in battle of plassey. british became masters of east india (bengal, bihar, orissa) – prosperous region flourishing agriculture, industry , trade. led large number of children being forced labour due increasing need of cheap labour produce large numbers of goods. many multinationals employed children because can recruited less pay, , have more endurance utilise in factory environments. reason many indian children hired because lack knowledge of basic rights, did not cause trouble or complain, , more trustworthy. innocence comes childhood utilised make profit many , encouraged need family income.

a variety of indian social scientists non-governmental organisations (ngos) have done extensive research on numeric figures of child labour found in india , determined india contributes one-third of asia’s child labour , one-fourth of world s child labour. due large number of children being illegally employed, indian government began take extensive actions reduce number of children working, , focus on importance of facilitating proper growth , development of children. international influences encourage legal actions taken in india, such geneva declaration of right of children act passed in 1924. act followed universal declaration of human rights in 1948 incorporated basic human rights , needs of children proper progression , growth in younger years. these international acts encouraged major changes workforce in india occurred in 1986 when child labour (prohibition , regulation) act put place. act prohibited hiring children younger age of 14, , working in hazardous conditions.


due increase of regulations , legal restrictions on child labour, there has been 64 percent decline in child labour 1993-2005. although great decrease in country of india, there still high numbers of children working in rural areas of india. 85 percent of child labour occurring in rural areas, , 15 percent occurring in urban areas, there still substantial areas of concern in country of india.


india has legislation since 1986 allows work children in non-hazardous industry. in 2013, punjab , haryana high court gave landmark order directed there shall total ban on employment of children age of 14 years, hazardous or non-hazardous industries. however, court ruled child can work or family in family based trades/occupations, purpose of learning new trade/craftsmanship or vocation.
