listeriosis infection caused bacterium listeria monocytogenes. outbreak originated lines 8 , 9 of maple leaf foods bartor road facility (establishment no. 97b) in north york, ontario, neighbourhood of toronto. there 220 possibly contaminated products, each stamped code 97b near best before date. since bacteria travelled through deli meats, cooked (and result free of pathogens), contamination occurred during packaging. outbreak first noticed in july when regular surveillance detected increase in cases reported. federal inspectors spent less 5 hours day @ plant in months before outbreak of illness, little 70 minutes.
