russian pilot n. de sackoff becomes first pilot shot down in combat when biplane, possibly maurice farman mf.7, hit ground fire following bomb run on walls of fort bizani during first balkan war. flying greeks, comes down near small town of preveza, on coast n of aegean island of levkas, secures local greek assistance, repairs aircraft , resumes flight base.

the french military balloon zodiac collapses in flight on noisy-le-grand, france, killing five.


27 may
lieutenant desmond arthur died when royal aircraft factory b.e.2 biplane, 205, collapsed without warning while flying on montrose. scotland s first fatal aircraft accident.


20 june
first fatality in u.s. naval aviation occurs when flight instructor ens. w.d. billingsley, flying aviation encampment @ greenbury point, maryland, thrown pilot seat of second wright ch seaplane, b-2, @ height of 1,600 feet in turbulent air on annapolis, maryland. passenger lt. john henry towers stays airplane, sustaining injuries when hits water. design modified conversion of wright model b 2 pusher propellers driven through chains connected 60 hp (45 kw) wright engine.

the s-21 sikorsky russky vityaz ( russian knight ), designed igor sikorsky , built rbvz, redesigned variant of bolshoi baltiski, first large aircraft intended exclusively bomber, first flies on date, world s first four-motored aircraft. lost in freak accident during 1913 military trials when gnôme rotary on moller ii pusher biplane (some sources cite morane design) tears loose , hits giant bomber.


17 july
major alexander william hewetson of 66th battery royal field artillery killed flying near stonehenge in wiltshire. stone memorial erected near spot. can seen road between stonehenge visitors centre , monument fargo wood.


4 september
u.s. army 11th cavalry 1st lt. moss lee love becomes 10th fatality in u.s. army aviation history when wright model c biplane crashes near san diego, california during practice military aviator test. on 19 october 1917, newly-opened dallas love field in dallas, texas named in honor. joe baugher lists fatal aircraft accident date being burgess model j, signal corps 18, dove ground killing pilot.


9 september
imperial german navy zeppelin, l 1, lz14, pushed down north sea off helgoland in thunderstorm, drowning 14 crew members. first zeppelin incident in fatalities occurred. 7 crew rescued motor torpedo boats.


13 october
imperial german air force-lt. koening {aviator # 166} killed in crash near neuendorf aerodrome near berlin. lts soren , rohstadt injured while taking flight between berlin , stuttgart


17 october
imperial german navy zeppelin l 2, lz18, destroyed exploding engine during test flight – entire crew of 28 killed.


14 november 
wright model c, signal corps 12, stalls , crashes manila bay, philippines, killing pilot. 1 source identifies him loren call, while gives name lt. perry rich. almanac , year-book 1914 gives name lt. c. perry rich.


24 november
lieuts. eric lamar ellington, chief instructor, , hugh m. kelly of 1st aero squadron, united states army aviation corps, killed date in fall of eighty feet in wright model c, signal corps 14. accident occurred @ ~0758 hrs. across bay san diego, california on grounds of army school on north island. on impact, engine broke free, crushing 2 aviators. these eleventh , twelfth army aviation casualties. front page of san diego union devoted details of ellington/kelly crash, under headline intrepid navigators of air crushed, mangled death in fall of government biplane, charges aviators slaughtered parsimonious government using antiquated machines. ellington field, texas, opens on 1 november 1917, named lt. ellington.


7 december
