structure

the combat engineers formation consists of 2 headquarters, training institute, 5 active battalions, , ten reservist battalions. each brigade of army has organic company of field engineers, deployed @ discretion of brigade commander, while each infantry battalion has organic platoon of pioneers support battalion movement.


unlike usual infantry sections of 7 men, field engineer section consists of 8 men. there 2 specialists in section, section commander , section 2ic.

engineer training institute (eti)

the engineer training institute combination of 3 former combat engineer training schools, namely school of combat engineers (soce), division engineer training centre (detc) , armoured engineer training centre (aetc). aetc removed eti of 1997 , re-established active unit, officially known 38th battalion, singapore combat engineers (38sce).


eti comprises engineer commander training school (ects), engineer vocational training school (evts), division engineer training centre (detc) , engineer staff training centre (estc). motto eti seek. strive. excel..


30th battalion, singapore combat engineers (30sce)

originally formed 30th combat engineer battalion (30 ceb) on 1 november 1968, 30th battalion, singapore combat engineers (30sce) provides combat engineering capability of 3rd singapore division, field , plant engineer support divisions , brigades of singapore army. typical field engineer tasks include demolition, fortification , building of wire obstacles , minefields, while plant engineers operate heavy construction machinery. battalion consists of 3 field companies , mechanized equipment company, , responsible clearing of obstacles in paths of advancing forces, opening of main , alternate supply routes, , ensuring mobility of army s manoeuvre elements (i.e. armour , infantry forces). construct obstacles deny movement enemy during retrograde operations , field fortifications protection of friendly forces.


in past, many field engineers suffered backbone problems due need carry heavy equipment. although use of machinery has alleviated problem, field engineers nevertheless still required bear substantial load during operations.


field engineers employ medium girder bridge, introduced singapore combat engineers in 1975. field engineer company of around 100 men take 7 hours construct bridge spanning more 50 metres. replaced foldable longspan bridge (flb) in 2001, 12 men require 3 hours construct 46-metre span of bridge. used cobra projection line charge (plc), man-packed portable, rocket propelled minefield lane clearing charge used clear infantry lanes through minefields. plant engineers known operate commercial construction equipment such excavators, shovels, bulldozers , cranes.

38th battalion, singapore combat engineers (38 sce)

the engineers armoured capabilities started 38 sce in 1970s. reorganised other units in 1994, re-established armoured engineers training centre (aetc) on 2 may 1997. unit s main role provide mobility support armour units.


the unit renamed 38 sce on 29 april 2009 following reprofiling active armoured engineer unit. battalion s motto steadfast , gallant, african elephant mascot.


the battalion employs leopard 2 vehicle launched bridge, bionix vehicle launched bridge, trailblazer, broncos attc, m113 land assault mine breaching equipment, fv180 combat engineer tractor, m728 combat engineer vehicle


headquarters army combat engineer group (hq armceg)

hq armceg formed on 31 march 1993, operational command bridging engineers in saf. ensures saf equipped necessary mobility , counter-mobility capabilities troops able remain mobile , overcome obstacles in missions.


35th battalion, singapore combat engineers (35sce)

35sce battalion specialised in military bridging. consisting of 3 companies, battalion provides transportation means in form of float bridges, rafts , assault boats projection of combat troops , vehicles across rivers , water obstacles facilitate troop movement.


established in 1969, 35th battalion singapore combat engineers first called 35 ceb, based @ loyang camp ten officers , 30 ncos. in 1971, battalion relocated current base @ seletar camp.


the battalion known use variety of bridging equipment. 1 company known training company while other operational company, operational status rotating each mono intake. each company split 3 platoons, namely 2 bridging platoons (alpha , bravo) , 1 watercraft platoon. each bridging platoon operates 4 m3g float bridges require operating crew of 4. each raft consists of 2 rigs, form class 60 raft or float bridge when coupled further. m3g float bridges require substantial bank preparation prior breaching in.


in january 2005, 35sce deployed meulaboh part of operation flying eagle, singapore s response 2004 indian ocean earthquake , tsunami. 45-man combat engineering team sent ashore prepare landing points supplies , equipment offloaded 3 endurance class landing platform dock ships of republic of singapore navy anchored off meulaboh. engineers assisted in clearing of debris , roads , creation of helicopter landing points.

headquarters chemical, biological, radiological , explosives defence group (hq cbre dg)

the singapore armed forces chemical, biological, radiological , explosives defence group established in october 2002 integration of operations , training of cbrd , eod under unified command. cbre specialised defence group manages issues concerning counter-terrorist cbre development. since inception, hq cbre dg has been integral part of saf’s ongoing effort in build-up of comprehensive counter-terrorism capability against conventional , non-conventional threats, , conducts preventive , response cbre operations in conjunction home team agencies on both home , international fronts.


hq cbre dg comprises 36th , 39th battalions, singapore combat engineers, , medical response force (mrf) saf medical corps, provides on-scene medical treatment casualties of chemical , biological agents. motto prepared , vigilant.


36th battalion, singapore combat engineers (36sce)

formed in 1969 bomb disposal unit (bdu), 36th battalion, singapore combat engineers explosive ordnance disposal (eod) unit of singapore armed forces, specialising in defusing explosive devices. in peacetime, 36sce handles security sweeps, attends discovered old war relics , ieds. in 1978, 36 sce sent team bangladesh aid in clearing of 500 lb aerial bomb.

39th battalion, singapore combat engineers (39sce)

the 39th battalion, singapore combat engineers chemical, biological , radiological defence (cbrd) unit of singapore armed forces, formed improve survivability of troops in chemical warfare environments. decontaminates incident sites contain chemical or biological hazards , provides sustained, multi-incident response capability. 39sce works closely singapore civil defence force (scdf) in event of chemical attack.


the gulf war highlighted increased threat of chemical weapons, prompting saf begin individual chemical defence familiarisation training servicemen in 1991. in response, 39sce raised on 1 december 1993 company strength unit @ seletar east camp develop chemical defence capability, , conduct training , experimentation in areas of chemical protection, detection , decontamination. 1996, saf had developed limited chemical response capability, fielded first time during world trade organization conference held in singapore. following september 11 attacks, singapore combat engineer s eod , cbrd battalions have worked home affairs agencies provide security coverage significant international events.
