on may 18, 2008, minnesota state legislature passed bill granting city of bloomington right use $34 million in tax-increment-financing pay public infrastructure support moa expansion. in 2011, construction began on expansion of south side of mall near killebrew drive, 506-room radisson blu hotel opened in march 2013. addition of hotel purposes of increasing accessibility park , making mall of america destination location anyone. addition of lightrail between airport , mall of america enabled people layovers in minneapolis spend convenient afternoon @ mall of america.

on march 24, 2012, triple 5 group announced start of $200 million expansion build north parking lot of mall. rather long planned phase ii expansion, step in building expansion. plans call additional hotel , additional 200,000 square feet (19,000 m) of retail space. in march 2014, ground broken on mall s north side $104 million, 14-story jw marriott hotel, owned , financed shakopee mdewakanton sioux community.


in winter 2012–2013, mall of america hosted 40 feet (12 m) tall ice castle made of icicles formed 4 million gallons of water , fused together. castle joined 50 large ice towers create series of shimmering archways, tunnels, walls , caverns.


in 2016, king of prussia mall in king of prussia, pa finished building 140,000+ square ft. expansion new shops , restaurants connecting 2 buildings; plaza, , court. expansion meant mall of america lost spot of being largest.
