between various editions, concept of poem changes. later edition on smaller conceptual scale, , emphasises concept of imprisonment found in book of urizen. version emphasised nature of intelligence , spiritual problems. later edition placed emphasis on idea of renovation being found within christianity. blake revised poem, added more concrete images , connected plot histories of druids , of christians along adding various locations connected them. in both editions of poem, blake changed mythological system in book of urizen dualistic struggle between 2 divine powers struggle of 4 aspects split eternity. these aspects blake s 4 zoas, represent 4 aspects of almighty god , vala first work mention them. in particular, blake s god/man union broken down bodily components of urizen (head), urthona (loins), luvah (heart), , tharmas (unity of body) paired emanations being ahania (wisdom, head), vala (nature, heart), enitharmon (what can t attained in nature, loins), , enion (earth mother, separation of unity). connected blake s understanding of divine, zoas god father (tharmas, sense), son of god (luvah, love), holy ghost (urthona, imagination), , satan of divine substance (urizen, reason) , emanations represent sexual urges (enion), nature (vala), inspiration (enitharmon), , pleasure (ahania).


blake believed each person had twofold identity 1 half being , other evil. in vala, both character orc , eternal man discuss selves divided. time working on later works, including vala, blake felt able overcome inner battle concerned losing artistic abilities. these thoughts carried on vala character los (imagination) connected image of christ, , added christian element mythic world. in revised version of vala, blake added christian , hebrew images , describes how los experiences vision of lamb of god regenerates los s spirit. in opposition christ urizen , synagogue of satan, later crucifies christ. them deism born.
