city of cambridge oldest town rowing club on cam. records show existence of cambridge boat racing club in 1844, largest contingent of went on become cambridge town rowing club in 1863. town club formed john harvey in working men s club used located on market hill; formed core of became ccrc in 1932. club s colours dark blue, claret , old gold.


records scarce first part of twentieth century, results in both bumps , 8 s head on thames existing late 1940s onwards. in 1953 first 8 finished 53rd on thames , held headship in town bumps. in same year, club s 90th anniversary, first town regatta run on cam. course ran pike , eel way down long reach , round plough. cambridge daily news reported r. evans of st neots disqualified knocking m. clay of nottingham , union river during singles race. clay appeared collect trophy soaked skin, hair on end , in bare feet . city sprints held in front of boat houses on shorter course.


city purchased freehold boathouse in 1959 , in 1963 celebrated official centenary opening new boathouse.

university bumps races had been held 1820s onwards town bumps took shape formation of cra (cambridgeshire rowing association) in 1868. city head of river in town bumps in 1875 performed poorly until 1914 when reached third place. in 1949 1st boat won blades , in 1951 head of river first time since headship lost in 1870s. retained headship next 6 years , in 1958 had chance equal rob roy s record of 8 consecutive headships (set 1904 1911).


in buildup 1958 bumps, robs , city posted identical times in timed race . on first night of bumps proper robs caught 99 s go second , leave 3 nights catch city. endeavour robs not bump determined city crew , record equalled. city went on retain headship further 2 years , new record of 10 consecutive years of headship set city before toppled in 1962 99 s. ten year record makes ccrc club formal right both weather vane, signifying 5 years of successive headship, , clock tower on boathouse.
