in mid-2009, griffiths signed five-year contract wwe. when received work visa, debuted in developmental territory, florida championship wrestling (fcw) in january 2010. under name mason ryan, competed against wrestlers including johnny curtis, tyler reks, johnny prime, , hunico in first matches.
on 22 july, ryan won triple threat match against defending champion alex riley , johnny curtis pinning riley win fcw florida heavyweight championship first time. on next few months, ryan defended championship against wrestlers including bo rotundo, richie steamboat, , eli cottonwood. @ tapings of fcw television on 2 september, ryan defended championship against johnny curtis when fcw commentator byron saxton interfered , aided him. following week, saxton became aligned ryan, accompanying him ring , acting manager. in november 2010, ryan toured europe smackdown brand, defeating chavo guerrero in belfast on 4 november , again in liverpool on 6 november. on 3 february 2011, ryan lost florida heavyweight championship bo rotundo, ending six-and-a-half month reign.
