tmr has been upper-income community, , until 1960s population majority anglophone. began change after quiet revolution, francophones gained access better-paying careers. town became popular , today community 46% francophone , home significant arab , asian canadian population.
on january 1, 2002, part of 2002–2006 municipal reorganization of montreal, merged montreal , became borough. however, after change of government , 2004 referendum, re-constituted independent town on january 1, 2006.
one notable feature of town naming of of streets, , idiosyncratic numbering system. streets pass through town may bear 2 names (in whichever language). example, jean talon street, large east-west thoroughfare crossing montreal kilometers, goes few hundred meters through tmr under name of dresden avenue, recover montreal name on other side of town. situation has been addressed putting 2 names on street signs. on these few hundred meters, tmr uses house civic numbering totally different of montreal on either side. sort of change in numbering system occurs on smaller streets shared both montreal , tmr (for example, trenton, lockhart , brookfield avenues, tmr numbering system decreases east west, jump 2 2400 on few meters of street still belong montreal.
