Action_at_Ludendorff_Bridge Hugh_Mott



on march 7, 1945, during allied offensive rhine river, combat command b of 9th armored division arrived @ town of remagen, discovering ludendorff bridge on rhine river intact. 3 man detachment 2nd platoon, b company (lieutenant hugh mott, staff sergeant john reynolds, , sergeant eugene dorland) moved first squad of a/27th aib reduce remaining explosives after first unsuccessful bridge demolition germans. third, fourth, , fifth soldiers onto bridge. crossing lead elements, dorland destroyed main demolition switch box on far shore. remainder of b company, 9th engineers followed rest of a/27th aib, finding , reducing more explosives on bridge. after crossing secured, lt. mott led b company in hasty bridge repairs allowed first sherman tanks cross bridge 2200 night.


in tribute major general mott, u.s. army engineer school, located @ fort leonard wood, missouri, named bachelor officer s quarters building mott hall in honor.
