in 1850 in washington, toombs slave, lousia, , possibly white attempted escape of new york abolitionist william l. chaplin. during pursuit of escapees, toombs said more concerned lousia white, did not care white. both caught when posse of 6 slave catchers chased chaplin s carriage out of washington. during chase, posse shot carriage, wounding occupants. when caught, chaplin beat , held in d.c. 6 weeks.


in 1852, toombs elected u.s. senate , white again accompanied toombs capital. around time white met abolitionist william seward, u.s. senator , lived 2 doors down toombs in capital. white studied ministry , received certification preach gospel on september 10, 1859. granted license preach @ gathering called 4th quarterly conference , local gathering of ame, in washington, georgia. shortly later in 1859 or 1860, white escaped toombs in 1860 , fled london, ontario. in canada, met , befriended future bishop of independent methodist episcopal church (which later unite ame church), augustus green. in october 1861, appointed bishop green charge of london ame mission.
