1970 – 1975

by 1970, light open-cockpit sports prototypes used engines under 2,000 cc (120 cu in) becoming popular cars in world championship makes. chassis manufacturers lola, chevron, abarth, , porsche offered cars customers designed category, leading fisa create championship these cars , serving junior formula world championship. races varied 250 km (160 mi) 500 km (310 mi), , ran either single event or in 2 heats. grand tourer cars allowed participate, although not included in championship standings.

the 1975 season cancelled shortly after had begun, 2 rounds being completed before rising fuel costs forced premature end championship. fisa pressed forward creation of world championship open-cockpit prototypes, combining not 2-litre entries european championship, prototypes larger engines had run in world championship makes.


1976 – 1977

during 1976 , 1977 seasons, fisa established new rules group 6 category of prototypes. 2-litre sports cars former european championship part of new group 6 classification, competing alongside sports prototypes used 3-litre , 5-litre engine rules. new world sports car championship created exclusively group 6 category. although world championship, 1 race held outside of europe in 1976 season, , events within europe in 1977.


porsche s 3-litre cars won every event in 1976 while osella s 2-litre cars second in manufacturer s championship. osella once again led 2-litre category in 1977 while alfa romeo s 3-litre cars won 8 rounds. @ end of 1977 season, fisa chose cancel world sports car championship in order concentrate on world championship makes. group 6 category allowed compete in world championship makes events once again, not allowed score points towards championship.


1978

after cancellation of world sports car championship, european sports car championship created 1978 in order allow group 6 prototypes continue compete own championship. manufacturers no longer granted own championship, , emphasis instead placed on drivers. series separated 2 categories, 1 2-litre cars , other larger capacity cars. osellas once again led 2-litre field, led drive gimax won 2-litre drivers championship. porsche driver reinhold joest won other drivers championship.


diminishing support sports prototypes , large number of drivers chose compete in italian group 6 championship led fisa cancel european championship outright after 1978. group 6 cars continued compete guests in world championship makes events until 1982 when regulations once again changed , group c category established.


1983

in 1981, world championship makes succeeded world endurance championship introduction of group c , group b regulations. part of change, drivers championship introduced first time alongside manufacturers championship. however, majority of teams concentrated on european events majority of schedule, third championship created, known european endurance championship.


the european endurance championship composed of 5 events part of manufacturers championship, 3 races not counted towards manufacturers championship attended teams. porsche driver bob wollek won 1983 endurance championship, although ranked fifth in world championship standings.


after 1983, fisa eliminated european endurance championship, choosing keep world championship drivers instead.
