dacres born in 1805, son of captain, later vice-admiral, sir richard dacres , martha phillips milligan. dacres had long history of naval service, sydney s uncle, james richard dacres, vice-admiral, while cousins barrington dacres , james richard dacres both serve in navy, former becoming post-captain, latter vice-admiral. father, richard dacres, had served sir sidney smith flag captain aboard hms pompee during mediterranean campaign, , under captain sir john colpoys, while colpoys commander of hms hannibal , hms london. sydney joined royal navy in 1817 @ age of 12, , after serving ten years, promoted lieutenant on 5 may 1827, aboard 46-gun hms blonde under captain edmund lyons. on 18 october lieutenant dacres involved in attack on turkish forces @ morea, during greek war of independence. , other lieutenants blonde, working in company french naval forces, landed guns , helped build batteries.


dacres promoted commander on 28 august 1834, being appointed first command, paddle sloop hms salamander on 16 august 1836. promoted post-captain on 1 august 1840 , duly relinquished command of salamander on 15 september 1840. briefly appointed command hms avenger in 1847, before taking on command of 120-gun first rate hms st vincent, 16 november 1847. st vincent @ time flagship of rear-admiral sir charles john napier, commander of channel fleet. dacres took command of 50-gun frigate hms leander on 28 september 1849, commissioning @ portsmouth , joining squadron of evolution. commanded leander until 3 june 1852, when shifted screw-propelled second rate hms sans pareil. took command on 8 june 1852, commissioning @ plymouth , sailing lisbon. spent 1853 part of channel squadron, outbreak of crimean war dacres sailed black sea in 1854 support operations. dacres remained in command until 22 november 1854, when succeeded acting-captain leopold george heath. appointed companion of bath on 5 july 1855, , on 30 april 1857 among british officers fought in crimea received permission queen victoria accept award of officer of légion d honneur.
