this open-cut station has 4 tracks , 2 island platforms, typical new york city subway express station. 2 pairs of i-beam columns run along lengths of both platforms.

directly above station newkirk plaza shopping area, located on either side of pedestrian walkway above station. mall opened in 1913, shortly after current station did. shopping area of open-air format , stores face passageway owned , maintained new york city department of transportation; however, stores privately owned. many of stores there small family-owned businesses, lending area small-town feel. since late 2000s, there have been efforts create business improvement district shopping area.


the manhattan-bound local track underneath east side of mall while coney island-bound 1 underneath west side of mall except section @ north end. express tracks in open view except in center (where station s entrance is) , @ either ends (where newkirk , foster avenues overpasses are).

the station s entrance , exit station house @ center of plaza. has token booth, turnstile bank, , staircase leading short landing above both platforms separate 2 staircases facing opposite directions going down platforms themselves. station house renovated in 1988, included installation of white tiles , stained-glass artwork titled transit skylight david wilson. station house located on newkirk avenue s south side between east 15th , east 16th streets.
