herzog discovered lead actor, bruno schleinstein, in documentary street musicians bruno der schwarze, es blies ein jäger wohl in sein horn (lit. bruno black one, hunter blows horn). fascinated, herzog cast him lead enigma of kaspar hauser despite fact had no training actor. further, historical hauser 17 when discovered in nuremberg , film implies this. schleinstein 41 years old @ time of filming, although character treated , described throughout youth. schleinstein s own life bore similarities kaspar hauser s, , own unbalanced personality expressed on set. in herzog s commentary english language dvd release, recalls schleinstein remained in costume entire duration of production, after shooting done day. herzog once visited him in hotel room, find him sleeping on floor door, in costume. schleinstein credited bruno s. in film. herzog subsequently wrote schleinstein screenplay second film, stroszek (1977).
