in east of utrecht lies utrecht hill ridge (dutch: utrechtse heuvelrug), chain of hills left lateral moraine tongues of glacial ice after saline glaciation preceded last ice age. because of scarcity of nutrients in fast-draining sandy soil, greatest part of landscape formerly heath has been planted pine plantations. south of province river landscape. west consists of meadows. in north big lakes formed digging of peat bogs formed after last ice age.
