until merger, aut , natfhe members in higher education involved in ongoing action short of strike - including boycotting setting , marking exams, , mark , park members mark coursework did not release marks , action continued ucu. lecturers taking industrial action on issues of pay, , gap has grown on last 20–30 years between remuneration , of other qualified public-sector professionals. prime minister tony blair promised significant percentage of new monies released universities put towards lecturers pay , had not happened.


aut , natfhe rejected offer of 12.6% on 3 years made on 8 may , further offer of 13.12% on 3 years made on 30 may.


concerns grew students not able graduate in 2006. national union of students leadership supported lecturers action , although matter raised @ various meetings nus support lecturers never challenged. in response feedback group of students unions nus advised aut/natfhe (ucu) support action not indefinite , wholly dependent on seeking fast resolution. many students unions around country went further , openly condemned action taken lecturers unions holding students ransom.


to support industrial action new union, on first day of existence, organised day of solidarity higher education members. included demonstration in london ended lobby @ headquarters of employers body, universities , colleges employers association (ucea).


following further talks on 6 june between ucu , ucea, sponsored tuc , acas, ucu agreed ballot of members on 13.1% offer (with increase of around 15% lower paid members of non-academic university staff) on 3 years, important proviso monies docked striking lecturers repaid , independent review consider mechanisms future negotiations , scope of funding available universities future pay settlements. pay increase phased on 3 years, final year s figure subject further increase in line inflation. boycott of assessment suspended on 7 june.
