2013 typhoon haiyan, philippines

on 8 november 2013, typhoon haiyan (known in philippines typhoon yolanda), largest typhoon in recorded history cut across visayas area of philippines. on 14.1 million filipinos affected disaster , on 1.1 million houses damaged either strong winds or storm surge followed.


during immediate disaster response, nethope worked part of emergency telecommunications cluster (etc) coordinate , establish connectivity in worst affected areas. members of etc worked provide connectivity international , local response organizations in each location regardless of etc member provided equipment , bandwidth.


nethope, along partner british telecom, established vsat data services , voip voice services in borongan, roxas, , estancia. furthermore, nethope acquired 6 ku-band vsat terminals , received donated satellite bandwidth asiasat, speedcast, , ses. these used provide connectivity in bogo city, concepcion, bantayan island, maya, carigara, , additional connectivity in estancia. donated bandwidth , services scheduled end @ end of february 2014 when broadband or mobile data connectivity scheduled reinstated in of these areas.

within days of 7.0 earthquake destroyed of haiti, nethope responded setting telecommunications links among dozen relief groups, largely in part $1.25 million donation microsoft , partnerships cisco , intel. 10 megabyte local network provided internet connectivity , extensions voice on internet protocol (voip)-style phones nethope s members coordinate delivery of supplies in haiti , send need assessments rest of world.


however, temporary network came under criticism month later local internet service providers (isps) said temporary network taking away business. inveneo, company nethope tapped build network, defended action saying in days after earthquake critical ngos have reliable connectivity in order coordinate actions using resources such google maps. local isp wired networks appeared remain functional in aftermath of earthquake, had lost electricity wireless base stations. agreement between inveneo , local isps made isps start receiving money ngos using bandwidth.

nethope had been developing netreliefkit cisco , inmarsat, when tsunami in pacific hit, saw necessary ngos communicate each other immediately, many had lost capability.
