the town grew in 19th century; in 1801 population 3,095. 1850 on 10,000 , 1901 39,000. railway connection essential growth, , there long delay before provided. london , birmingham railway (l&br) had been built through tring in 1838, , great northern railway built through hitchin in 1852, both bypassing luton, largest town in area. branch line connecting l&br @ leighton buzzard proposed, because of objections release of land, branch reached luton s smaller rival, dunstable, in 1848. ten years before branch extended bute street station, , first train dunstable ran on 3 may 1858. line later extended welwyn , 1860 direct trains king s cross ran. midland railway extended bedford st pancras through leagrave , midland road station , opened on 9 september 1867.


luton had gas supply in 1834, , gas street lights erected , first town hall opened in 1847.


newspaper printing arrived in town in 1854, coincidentally year first public cemetery opened. following cholera epidemic in 1848 luton formed water company , had complete water , sewerage system late 1860s. first covered market built (the plait halls, demolished) in 1869. luton made borough in 1876 , football club founded in 1885 following passing of resolution @ town hall luton town club formed .
