lt. john s. ansley of 111th observation squadron, texas national guard, crashes in curtiss jn-4h, 24-158, (one source gives type curtiss jn-6 ) @ ellington field, texas, when enters tailspin during practice, @ insufficient altitude recover, airframe smashing pile of stacked lumber. pilot dies later in hospital.


21 march
martin gmb (glenn martin bomber), usaas 64308, ex-post office (possibly 202), ends cross-country flight parris island, south carolina, noses on when hits unmarked ditch on airfield. pilot 1st lt. (later lieutenant general) harold l. george reported later remember being told (parris island) exceptional landing field. except information had failed inform me marines had dug trench across field. not indicated markers, or in other way. didn t know trench there until stopped quickly. airframe had logged 99 hours when written off.


27 march
british-born 2nd lt. oscar monthan (1885–1924) killed when martin nbs-1 bomber, as-68448, of 5th composite group, fails clear baseball field backstop on take-off luke field, ford island, oahu, hawaiian islands. davis-monthan landing field, later davis-monthan air force base, tucson, arizona, named in part him, 1 november 1925. attended high school in community.


30 april
one of 4 douglas world cruiser aircraft, seattle , 23-1229, c/n 145, attempting around-the-globe flight in stages, crashes mountain in alaska on date. crew, major frederick l. martin , staff sergeant alva l. harvey, survive , make way through wilderness safety. wreckage of seattle later recovered , on display in alaska aviation heritage museum.


2 june 
assisting u.s. weather bureau in research, usaas balloons , airship school schedules fifteen balloon flights scott field, illinois, dr. c. leroy meisinger, had gained experience balloons , meteorology air service officer during war. project ends tenth flight, date, when lightning strikes balloon, killing both dr. meisinger , pilot, 1st lt. james m. g. t. neely.


2 august
one of 3 surviving douglas world cruiser aircraft, boston , 23-1231, c/n 147, loses oil pressure while flying west on north atlantic, has alight on open sea. crew rescued, during attempt tow float aircraft uss richmond, aircraft capsizes in rough seas , has abandoned near faroe islands.


15 september
a curtiss n-9 seaplane, equipped radio control , without human pilot aboard, flown on 40-minute flight @ naval proving grounds, dahlgren, virginia. although aircraft sank damage sustained while landing, test demonstrated practicability of radio control of aircraft.


10 october 
u.s. army blimp tc-2 explodes on newport news, virginia, when bomb carrying detonates. 2 of 5 crew killed. washington, oct. 10 - lieutenant bruce martin of san francisco injured 4 other army men when army blimp tc-2 forced ground explosion of 1 of bombs @ langley field, virginia. newport news, va., oct. 10 - lieutenant bruce h. martin died @ midnight result of injuries sustained @ langley field morning when bomb carried u. s. army blimp tc2 prematurely exploded, wrecking craft , injuring 5 members of crew.


10 october 
the rear section of uss shenandoah damaged while making landing in windy conditions @ naval air station north island, san diego, california, after completing second leg of cross-country flight fort worth, texas. slight damage done shenandoah when airship brought ground last night. officers @ north island morning stated 1 of rear gondolas struck ground slightly, sufficient force strain 2 of girders in aft portion. damage, said, not serious, on account of mountains flown on over flight camp lewis, deemed best make thorough tests avoid possibility of accident. work of repairing strained girders continued day yesterday (13 october).


11 october 
philadelphia, oct. 11 - flying in excess of 150 miles hour, united states navy racing seaplane ftw fell 100 feet delaware river [sic] today , wrecked. pilot, badly injured, extricated himself. wright f2w-2, a7644, suffered poor handling characteristics, tremendous torque of huge wright t-3 tornado liquid-cooled engine flipping racer onto on landing during first , flight.


16 october
emergency use of parachute — following mid-air collision on coronado, california, gunner william m. coles, usn, of vf-1, made successful emergency parachute jump curtiss jn-4.


20 october
raf vickers virginia mk ii j6856 of 7 squadron severely damaged in force landing @ bishop s stortford, hertfordshire following engine failure. aircraft subsequently repaired , returned service.


18 november 
laguna beach, nov. 19. - rescued rough seas 2 men in rowboat when seaplane landed 100 yards off of rocky shores here, lieutenants douglas powell , charles haltline of u. s. s. new mexico recovering exposure , shock. 1 of rescuers, arose sick bed aid officers, ill, suffering relapse , exposure. associated press reported: san diego, nov. 18. - lieutenants douglas powell , charles g. halpine, naval aviators, rescued evening off laguna beach, according telephone messages place. aviators left city late today fly battleship new mexico @ san pedro. off laguna beach lieutenant powell s machine, repaired @ north island, developed engine trouble , powell forced descend ocean. lieutenant halpine came down aid him , managed tow line him. darkness, however, set in , 2 officers, not knowing were, forced stop when neared breakers. there shouted , shout heard residents of beach assembled battery of automobiles on bluff , trained headlights on aviators while 2 beach residents went out in lifeboat , got officers shore. flying vought uo-1 observation planes, replaced other types aboard catapult equipped cruisers , battleships 1923.
