five royal naval air service crew en route manston, england villacoublay, france in handley page 0/100 bomber, run clouds, lose direction due compass fault, , land ask directions. unfortunately, come down behind german lines @ chalandry, near lâon, france, , before can either burn machine or take off, german infantry patrol captures them , intact bomber. unconfirmed story states manfred von richthofen flew machine 10,000 feet before kaiser @ later date. source cites 2 february date of incident.
21 january
sergente menegoni of 71 squadriglia, regio esercito, killed when nieuport 11, 1622, suffered structural failure of wing struts , crashed.


28 january
royal aircraft factory test pilot maj. frank w. goodden killed in second prototype s.e.5, a4562 @ rae farnborough, when breaks in flight. @ time of death, goodden 1 of britain s experienced pilots. inspection found wings had suffered failure in downward torsion. plywood webs added compression ribs, curing trouble , standardized on later s.e.5s , 5a s.


7 february
imperial german navy zeppelin lz82 l 36, damaged during landing in fog @ rheden upon aller , decommissioned.
12 march 
flight sub-lieutenant ronald victor knight, royal naval air service, died @ raf cranwell on 12 march 1917 assistant flying instructor. engine of plane in flying failed , dived death. buried in wells cemetery, somerset , name shown on war memorial in wells.
26 march
ex-royal flying corps pilot j. b. fitzsimmons killed while engaging in low level aerobatics in high wind in sole nestler scout (no serial) when fabric began stripping wings. fitzsimmons crashes hangar , airframe wrecked. no further development work takes place on design.


june
during month, 6 russian anatra d biplanes crash due poor quality manufacturing, killing pilots. russian aircraft builder hampered shortage of high-quality wood , fabricated each wing spar in 2 pieces, overlapping @ joint 12 inches, held glue , tape.


16 june
imperial german navy zeppelin l 40, lz88, damaged beyond repair in failed landing @ nordholz airbase.


july
even though vickers had experience in building promising tractor scouts, , pusher-style gunbus had been outmoded 2 years in presence of dedicated dogfighters, company built 1 prototype vickers f.b.25, powered 150-hp. direct-drive hispano-suiza engine in 1917, armed 1 1.59 inch breech-loading vickers q.f. gun, mk ii (popularly known vickers crayford rocket gun ) in nose anti-airship night fighter. ten-inch searchlight intended fitted in extreme nose there no evidence ever installed. design underwent trials @ martlesham heath in late june or july, crashed whilst landing in strong wind, trials report stating due poor controls, aircraft proved unmanageable in wind on 20 mph . serial of aircraft not known, although document, traced recently, refers no. 13 , , has been suggested may indicate a9813 – formerly cancelled number intended sopwith triplane.


21 july
french test pilot/instructor jean robinet, awarded aviator s certificate no. 476 aéro-club de france on 29 april 1911, kwf anatra d @ anatra factory, odessa, russia, date.


7 august
squadron commander edwin h. dunning, rnas, (17 july 1892 – 7 august 1917) during landing attempt aboard hms furious, pennant number 47, in sopwith pup, n6452, decides go around before touchdown, le rhône rotary engine chokes, pup stalls , falls water off starboard bow. pilot stunned, drowns in 20 minutes before rescuers reach still-floating airframe. dunning had made 2 previous successful landings on furious, first-ever aboard moving vessel.


25 august
sole vickers f.b.26 vampire, b1484, piloted vickers test pilot harold barnwell, crashes @ joyce green, when attempts spin without sufficient altitude recovery. pilot kwf.


17 september
a kite balloon uss huntington hit squall , while being hauled down struck water hard observer, lieutenant (jg) henry w. hoyt, knocked out of basket , caught underwater in balloon rigging. balloon pulled toward ship, patrick mcgunigal, ships fitter first class, (30 may 1876 – 19 january 1936) jumped overboard, cleared tangle , put line around lieutenant hoyt hauled on deck. act of heroism, mcgunigal later awarded medal of honor, first of great war. huntington convoying 6 troopships across atlantic france , balloon observation being made transited war zone.


19 october
imperial german navy zeppelin lz50 l 16, damaged beyond repair in forced landing near brunsbüttel.


29 october
lt. heinrich gontermann, known balloon strafer, receives fatal injuries when fokker dr.i 115/17, of jasta 15, performing aerobatics on airfield @ 1,500 feet in, suffers structural failure top wing breaks up, crashes, suffers grievous facial injuries, dies following day. triplane had been delivered jasta 15 on 22 october foul weather kept grounded until 28th. gontermann had scored 21 airplane kills , 18 balloons.


31 october
fokker dr.i 121/17, flown lt. pastor jasta 11, 1 of jg.1 units under manfred von richthofen, suffers structural failure , crashes. second such crash in 3 days causes fokker triplanes grounded affected flight crew reverting temporarily albatros d.va , pfalz d.iii scouts. accidents investigated 2 november, reports issued 13 days later. instructions manufacturing , assembly improvements implemented, production , flying resume 28 november.


22 november
a tellier t.3 seaplane piloted u.s. navy ensign kenneth r. smith, electrician s mate wilkinson , machinist s mate brady on board, forced down @ sea on flight out of nas lecroisic, france, investigate reported presence of german submarines south of belle isle. 2 days later, , minutes before damaged aircraft sank, rescued french destroyer. first armed patrol u.s. naval aviator in european waters.


december
second prototype sopwith snipe, b9963, tricky fly 230 hp (170 kw) bentley br2 rotary engine had immense torque made directional control difficult, being tail heavy while climbing, , nose heavy while diving, crashes, @ rae farnborough, england. airframe may have been rebuild of b.r.1-engined prototype.


1 december 
a caproni ca.4 bomber, c/n 5349, arrived @ langley field, virginia, part of shipment of various italian aircraft in september 1917, erection delayed lack of appropriate hangar, readied flight on date. upon takeoff, 1 motor fails , unable maintain airspeed on remaining 2 powerplants, airframe piles on edge of field. no injuries, airframe total loss.


12 december
north sea class blimp n.s.5 sets off rnas east fortune, both engines fail within sight of destination, , drifts wind 10 miles (16 km) before can restarted. however, since both engines continue troublesome decided make free balloon landing, ship damaged beyond repair during attempt.
