on april 14, 1927, bill signed governor john stuchell fisher appropriating $450,000 on condition cook forest association raise remaining $200,000 purchase 6,055 acres. on december 28, 1928, funds having been raised cook forest association, secretary of department of forests , waters announced formal purchase.


money association helped commonwealth purchase 6,055 acres (2,450 ha) a. cook sons company in 1927 $640,000. cook forest became first pennsylvania state park acquired preserve natural landmark.


built in 1929, firetower used spot forest fires. stands on 80 feet (24 m) tall. while no longer in use, public can still climb top of stairs. in addition, on rare occasions, top spotting area opened guide allow visitors closer look.


the cook forest state park indian cabin district national historic district includes 11 contributing buildings. single room log cabins located on toms run behind park office. built civilian conservation corps part of camp sp-2, operated in park october 1933 september 1935. these cabins constructed largely of american chestnut logs selected due both long-term rot-resistance , impending local extinction of species due chestnut blight.
