kilflynn historical civil parish in barony of clanmaurice. barony developed area had been in control of native leaders (especially o conors) taken on norman, maurice, son of thomas fitzgerald of shanid died in 1213. thomas fitzgerald himself son of maurice fitzgerald, lord of llanstephan, had supported strongbow , lord pembroke, in cambro-norman invasion of ireland in 1169 , began geraldine dynasty in ireland , house of desmond. later earls of county kerry scions of fitzmaurice barons.


kilflynn has sixteen constituent townlands: ballyconnell, cappagh, castletown, cloghaneleskirt, cloonnafinneela, crotta, fahavane, glanballyma, gortclohy, kilflynn (village), knockbrack east, knockbrack west, knocknahila, rea, stack’s mountain , tooreen.


the stack family, of norman heritage, had seat @ crotto (later known crotta) north of kilflynn , owned surrounding townlands.

kilflynn had been known stackstown, , name remains geographically in stack s mountains south-east of kilflynn. family landowners, namely james (owner of garrynagore, gortclohy , cloghanaleskirt), john (owner of aghacoora), richard (owner of killaspicktarvin (and more northerly townlands)) , thomas stack (owner of gortaneare, ballyconnell, castletown, crotta, glanballyma, knocknahila, cloonnafinneela, , cappagh) forfeited landed possessions because of support irish rebellion of 1641 , subsequent catholic confederation. reconquest of ireland between 1649 , 1652 cromwellian forces after english civil war resulted in act settlement of ireland of 1652 required survey redistribution of land (hence sir william petty s survey) invading soldiers in lieu of wages. henry ponsonby, younger brother of colonel in new model army, recipient of of stacks (and others ) confiscated land - of profitable. reconfirmed in 1666, after acts of settlement. part of down s survey pender s census, taken between 1654 , 1659. census refers barony of clanmorice , townland of crottoe , tituladoe henry ponsonby esq. population whole of clanmaurice given 1126, of whom 86 english , 1040 irish. there 17 surname stack , 17 fitzmorrice , macmorrice .


ponsonby built crotta house in 1669. house sold in 1842 thomas carrique ponsonby (later resident in dublin, possibly marked end of ponsonbys in kerry) , being leased 1850 lieutenant colonel henry horatio kitchener, father horatio herbert kitchener, first earl kitchener, earl of khartoum, field marshal of british army , minister war great britain, spent of youth @ crotta. derelict remains of house collapsed or demolished in 20th century.

from 1840 poor law union plans (as basic administrative division) of listowel replaced norman clanmaurice barony , civil parish boundaries (although latter continued used make comparisons) after act of 1838.


kilflynn on main road tralee county limerick. farming principal industry centuries , services such forges smithing, , lime kilns late 1600s (to make lime acidic soils) developed around this. local forges still operational in mid-20th century. remains of kilns can still found dotted landscape. there population decline, possibly partly associated opening of main tralee-listowel road south in 1846, , north kerry railway line stations opening @ abbeydorney , lixnaw in 1880 (the line ceasing services entirely 1978). however, there 1840s onwards significant effect of peak years of great famine in between 20% , 30% of population of kerry died or emigrated (see map). in 1841, 1851 , 1861 population of kilflynn village 147, 134 , 119 respectively (in 2011 126). area covers 2 election districts (kilflynn , kilfeighny) these figures may not entirely representative.
